Find out about your dreams

Some people say that you can't really speak a language until you start to dream in that language. I'm not really sure that's true, but in this activity we can look at how you can start to write and understand your dreams in English.

This task is based around a website called DreamDoze, where people share their dreams and help each other understand them. The site enables you to write down your dreams, share them with other people and get their interpretation of your dream. You can also read about other people's dreams and help them to understand them.

NB: As with any social networking site. Never share personal information about your location etc.

Task:

Go to http://dreamdoze.com/ and click on 'Sign Up' to register. You can have a look at some of the dreams on the site first if you wish.

You then simply type in a title for your dream, choose a topic and describe your dream (in English of course).

When you have finished click on 'Share this Dream'. When someone interprets your dream, you will get an email message. Once you have signed in you can also write your interpretations of some of the dreams on the site. You can also find out more about dreams by checking the knowledge base: http://dreamdoze.com/knowledge-base/

If you are really interested in dreams and what they mean you can check the dream dictionary. Just type in something that was in a dream and it will tell you what it means. Dream Dictionary

You can also find lots of videos about the meaning of dreams on YouTube.

If you are interested in dreams and what they mean, reading and writing about them each day is a really quick and simple way to help improve your English.

Create your video diary

One of the most difficult things to develop when you are alone is your speaking. Speaking is of course also one of the most useful skills, so in this activity you will find out how to practice your speaking by keeping a video diary using a free online service called Keek. Here's an example.

To do this you will need either a computer with a webcam, or a smart phone (either an iPhone or an Android based phone)

Task:

To start recording your video diary go to Keek.com create your username and password and click on 'Sign Up'.

Once you have signed up you can record your first entry. It's very easy to do this, you just click on the big green button at the top of the screen.

When you click on the button you will see a video window open. Just click on the camera icon and you can start to record your first diary entry.

When you have finished speaking, click on stop and then you can review your entry. Click 'Preview' to watch and listen to yourself and make sure you are happy with what you say. You can easily record your diary entry again if you think you can do better, just click on 'Redo'.

When you are satisfied with your entry, click on 'Publish'. You can then add a short text / caption. You can also decide if you want to share your diary entry with friends on Facebook too. Next click on 'Publish'. Your video entry will become public.

When people see your video entry, they can leave comments using text, or video comments, or they can 'Follow' you if they think your entries will be interesting.

It can be difficult to think of things to talk about everyday, so here are some examples.

You could also talk about new words you have learned or share things about your country or culture.
It's easier to make your diary interesting if you have a smartphone as you can go to interesting places and talk about them. Practice Your Spelling

As with most languages, spelling is pretty important in English. It's also something that gives many native speakers problems too, so don't be too worried if you find English spelling difficult and confusing. In this activity you'll be able to practice spelling and your vocabulary in an enjoyable way.

The activity is a fast paced game. You have a row of letters and have to use them to create and type words as quickly as you can.

Task:

Go to: http://deepleap.org/. The game starts as soon as you arrive. You will see some letters and a space below to type.

If you can't make words from the letters you see, just wait and more will appear on the right.

As the row fills, the letters on the left will disappear and be lost.
You must try to use as many of the letters as possible before they are lost and make as many words as you can.

You will lose any letters that are used in words spelled incorrectly.

Try to score as many points as you can. You will have 75 letters in total.

Play Word Games to Improve Your Vocabulary

Having a wide vocabulary is really important to push the level of your English. This activity shows you how to push the level of your vocabulary and revise some of the words you already know while playing a simple online game similar to Scrabble.

In this task you'll also learn how to use an online tool to help you find new words to use your letters.

Task:

Go to: http://wordsquared.com/. You don't need to register, just click on 'Start Playing'

You will see your row of letters at the bottom of the screen. Choose any letter on the board that you can join your letters onto and make a complete word.
Drag the letters onto the board the click on 'Add Word'. If the word is correct it will be added to the board and you will get a score and some new letters.

The next word you make must join onto the previous one and you can only build on the words you have added. Each word you add increases your score.

If you can't think of a word, go to Scabble helper at: http://www.wineverygame.com/ Type in your letters and in either the 'Prefix' or 'Suffix' box type in the letter that you want to join onto from the board and click on 'View words'.

You will then see a list of possible words that you can make with your letters. Add the one you want, but be sure to check the meaning of the new word if you don't already know it.

Continue with the game until you have at least 100 points. Keep a list of any new words and their meanings as you play.

Try to play the game every day and build up your score and your vocabulary.

Create your own vocabulary tests

Developing your vocabulary is one of the quickest ways of improving your English, but remembering new vocabulary can take time and effort.

In this task you find out how to use an online dictionary to find synonyms and antonyms and how to use this to create your own interactive tests to help you remember the words.

Task:

Find an article that you are interested in or that you have recently studied. Choose some 8 or 10 the newer or more difficult words from the text.

Next got to: http://www.en.wrds.eu/user/create and register (it's free). You just need to create a user name and password and give an email address.
Sign in and then click on 'Create a new list'.

Give your list a title (it could be the title of the text the words come from) and then type your new words into the column on the left.

Now go to: http://www.synonym.com/. Here you can type in your new words then click to find synonyms, antonyms or definitions of the words.
Once you find the antonym etc, copy it into the column next to your new word on the Wrds site.

Once you have added all the words and definitions, click on 'Save' and then click on 'Test'.

You can the choose the type of test you would like to take. The tests vary so try them all.

Each time you come back to the site you can add more word lists and revise old ones. You can even share lists you have created with friends. I hope you find this a useful way of revising your vocabulary.

Train yourself to hear song lyrics

Listening to songs is a great way to learn a language. It's easy to listen to a song many times, especially if it's one that you enjoy and this can really help with your listening and pronunciation.
This activity is based around the Lyrics Training website. The site helps you to listen to and understand songs.

Task:

Go to: http://www.lyricstraining.com here you can search for a song that you like or select on from the home page. Once you click on a song it will start to play, you can then select your level.

You then see some of the words of the song with some gaps. The song will stop so that you can write in the missing words.

You can also select your own language so that you can see a translation of the lyrics in your own language.

Click on 'Help' to see all the instructions.

Show and tell online

Show and Tell has been a very popular activity in the English language classroom for quite some time. It is often based around bringing in to class an object or photograph of something that is important to you and asking and answering questions about it.
Now you can 'show and tell' with the world and share images from your life and ask and answer questions using a website called Shuttercal. It's very simple, you just upload a picture each day and write a few sentences about it. This is a great way to practice reading and writing and communicate with real people.

Task:

First go to: http://shuttercal.com/ and create your account (It's free).

Once you have done this you can log in and start to look at other people's photographs and leave comments on the ones you like. You can do this just by going to the 'Explore' menu and looking for new photographs.

Click on an image that you find interesting, click on 'Comments' on the bottom right corner.
You should now be able to see a text field and add a comment or question. Once you have added a question click on submit and the owner of the image will get a message with your question.

Be patient it could take some time before you get a reply. Try to comment or ask questions about ten images.
You should also upload some of your own images. To do this, go to your own calender, by clicking on your name. then click on the square for today. You should then be able to browse your computer for an image and upload it. Youc an also add some comments and information about the image.

Keep adding images everyday and commenting on other people's images. This way you will build up a network of contacts to interact and communicate with.

Write a Blues Song in English

Listening to music and songs is a great way to improve your listening skills, vocabulary and pronunciation.
In this activity you create a Blues song and then listen to it. You will then listen to some more Blues music and do some listening dictation.

Task:

Go to: http://www.thebluesmaker.com/ and click on 'Start it Right Away'.
There are ten steps to creating your song. In step 1 complete the first line of the song. The song starts " I lost my .." and you choose the end of the line by clicking on one of the 4 choices.
Then move on to step 2 and choose the harmonica sound you want next. Once you have the sound you like, continue and choose the next line of the song.
Continue through all the steps until you get to step 10, then click on 'Finish my Blues'. Wait a few moments and you will be able to hear your song.
Once the song has finished playing, you can share it by sending it to your friends. Just add email addresses and click send.

If you enjoy this song, you can find more Blues music on YouTube by going to 'Browse', 'Music' and 'Blues' (or click here: Blues).
Try to find a song you like and write down the lyrics / words of the song. Once you think you have written down all the lyrics, go to: http://2hats.net/yl/ Here you will be able to search for the video and the correct lyrics to check your work.

Memorize a Song

Learning and enjoying songs can be a great way to improve your listening, vocabulary and pronunciation. In this activity we are going to use two websites to help you find, listen to and memorize the words of a song.
First you'll use YouLyrics to find the words and a video of the song, then you will use MemorizeNow to help you learn and remember the words.

Task:

First go to the YouLyrics site at: http://2hats.net/yl/ You will see featured and the most recently listed songs and videos.

You can either select one of these or search for a song you like, by typing in the name of the song and artist at the top of the page.

Once you have found the song you want to learn, watch the video and read the lyrics. If you click on the link to one of the videos it will open and play beside the lyrics.
Once you have watched the video, copy the lyrics and go to: http://www.memorizenow.com/
Paste the lyrics into the text field, add a title then click on the 'add' button. The title will appear in the 'items to memorize' list.

You can then click on the title and start to memorize the words. If you click on the arrows above the text, words will start to disappear from the text.
Try to remember the missing words as you read through the text. If you can't remember them you can click the back arrow and the missing words will appear again.

You can gradually remove more and more of the words until they all disappear. If you have problems remembering the words listen to the video clip again and this will help you. You can also try to remember the words with just the first letter as a prompt. Just click on 'Letters'.

You can also start to remove the letters by clicking on the arrows. If you want to see the complete text again you can either click on the 'memorize' button again of 'display all' and this will show you the complete text.

You can also save the activity to your computer desktop so that you can revise and review the words at a later time. Just click on 'save' and follow the instructions. Listening to songs and trying to learn and memorize the lyrics is an enjoyable way to improve your listening and vocabulary skills and if you sing along it can also improve your pronunciation. Read and Write Very Short Stories

Reading and writing both help to improve your vocabulary and give you the opportunity to use your language skills in a creative way.

Today's activity will show you how to get simple quick writing practice and how to give and receive feedback and criticism of your written work. The activity is based around a site called Five Card Stories and will help you to create a story based on 5 images.

Task:

First you are going to read some very short stories based on images. Look at the five images that go with it, read each story and then vote how good you think the story is. If you think the story is really good, give it 10 stars. If you think it's really bad, give it just one.

Now you have read and voted on the stories try to improve them. Below each story, you have the chance to write your own version using the same images. You can either rewrite the story and try to improve it or write your own story based on the same images.

To write the story just give it a title, use add a name (it doesn't have to be your real name) complete the story and then type in the two security words and save it to the site. You''ll then be able to come back each day and see how people have voted on your story.

If you enjoy short writing activities you can come back to the site and create your own story by choosing images yourself. Just go to: http://web.nmc.org/5cardstory/flickr.php and select the images you want in your story. Tip: It's easiest if the first image you select is of a person or animal, this can then be the main character in your story.

A City Love Story

Today's activity is about talking about your city and the things you love, and was inspired by a YouTube video that tells a short love story. The Story is set in Beirut in Lebanon and tells the story of how two young people meet and fall in and out of love. The video though is also a tribute to the city that they both love and the things that they like about it.

The wonderful thing about the video is that it shows you the inside of a city from the perspective of two people who live there. So in this task you will watch the video and then see how you can make your own tribute to the place you live.

Task:

So, first here is the video. It isn't in English, but it has English subtitles, so it will be easy to follow. Just pause the player if you need more time to read the subtitles.
The first part of the story shows the two people meeting and what they like about their city and what they like doing there. Watch and decide which of them has the most similar likes to your own.

Were you more similar to the girl or the boy? Were you surprised by what you saw of Beirut? Was it as you expected?
Think about the things they like about their city and the things that you like about your city.
Now take a camera and go round your city taking photographs of things that you like, places that you like to go and things that you like doing.
If you don't want to go taking photographs you could search for images on Flickr.com. Use the Creative Commons section where you can find images that are free to use without copyright restrictions as long as you aren't selling what you create. Just search for images of your city or things that you like doing.

Once you have collected your images you will need to make them into a video. You can do this using a free product called Photo Story 3, which you can download from here It is for use on PCs running Windows.

Photo Story 3 enables you to create projects using images music, your own voice and text and then covert them into video.
Here you can find a short video showing you how to create your photo story.
Photo Story 3 Tutorial

Create your project, add some music from your city and narrate the video in English, telling people what you like about your city. You can also add text to help people understand.
Once you have finished you can upload the video to YouTube and share it or you can keep it as part of your English digital portfolio.

Write Your Auto Biography

An important part of being a good conversationalist is being a good listener and asking people questions about what they tell you, but sometimes you also have to talk about yourself and be prepared to answer questions.

In today's task you are going to answer questions about yourself and in doing this create your autobiography. You are going to do this using a website called Biographicon which is a site that collects the biographies of ordinary people like you and me.

Task:

Go to: http://www.biographicon.com/ and click on 'Create a new biography' then type in your name and create a new biography.

You will then see the frame for your biography. Click where it says 'Answer a questions about ...' and a field will open with a question and answer that you should complete.

Complete the answer to the questions and then click on 'OK, next questions'.

You will the see the next question. Work through answering as many of these questions as you can. When you have finished answering questions, you can click on edit and you will be able to upload an image of yourself.

You can also add some basic information like when and where you were born etc in the 'Overview' section.

Once you are finished you should have quite a complete biography of yourself that you can link to or share with friends.

As your English improves and things in your life change you can also go back and edit your biography. You don't have to complete it all in one day you can do a little more each day and add few more answers to questions.

Learn to Put Your Make Up on in English

YouTube offers you so many opportunities to learn English and also to learn how to do new things, learn how to do things better or teach others how to do things.

In today's activity we'll look at some 'home' produced YouTube channels and learn a bit more about how to use make up and other cosmetics and develop your vocabulary in this area. We'll also look at how you can enter into a dialogue with the people who create the videos.

Task:

You are going to watch 3 short videos showing you how to apply make up. The first video is by Andrea and has no words, just text and images. Pause the video to make notes of any new words you see in the text.

Now look at the new words you noted down and check to find a definition for them on this site: Make Up USA Vocabulary.
Just click on the word to the left of the screen and you will find images of the kinds of products in the video.

Now that you have a bit more vocabulary, you can watch this second video and listen as Michelle Phan describes how she puts on her make up.

The vocabulary in these videos and the range of accents can be very challenging, but if you watch and listen to a number of different ones you will find they become easier to understand, and if you do have a problem with understanding some of the things that they are saying or doing, remember that you can leave a comment or ask a question by going to the video on YouTube.
Here's one more video for you to watch. In this one Elle describes the make up used in the 'Blockbuster' movie 'Twilight'.

One of the great things about people who produce these kinds of videos is that they welcome communication with the people who watch their videos, so you can either go to their channel on YouTube and send them a comment or question or you can follow them on Twitter and see what they have to say and ask them questions.

Study a Classic of Literature

Many great works of literature have been translated into other languages, but there is nothing quite as good as reading a book in the original language. In today's activity you are going to study a classic of English literature; 'The Old Man and The Sea' by Ernest Hemingway.

You are going to use a number of different tools to make this easier and more enjoyable.

Task:

First go to Wikipedia and find a summary of the plot. You can do this with most books, just by searching for the name in Wikipedia. Click on the link to see The Old Man and the Sea Plot.
Read through the plot, then watch this animated video of the story. It takes about 20 mins, so make sure you have time before you start.

Now that you know the plot and have seen the video you should be able to tackle the book.
You can read the complete book online at Google books The old man and the sea
The book is quite long to read, but you should now have a good grasp of the story. If you want to study the story in more depth you can find notes and analysis of the story at: SparkNotes - The old man and the sea

This is a good way you can try to read and understand more classics of English literature.

Find video clips of the story on YouTube or Google Video
Find the complete book on Google books
Find notes and analysis on SparkNotes

Learn from and Create Animated Music Videos

Learning English from songs lyrics and music is a great way to study. In today's activity you are going to be able to watch and enjoy some simple 'stop motion' animated music videos and then find out how to create your own.
The videos for you to watch come from two sources; Music and Muffins and SereneRhapsody and you can find more examples on their YouTube Channels

Task:

For the first part of this task, you can simple watch and enjoy two short music videos and just decide which video you like the most.
This one is "You Could Be Happy" and the music is by Snow Patrol

This one is called "Rain drops" and the music is by Regina Spector

You can find more videos like this at Music and Muffins and Serene Rhapsody
Once you have chosen the video you like best, think about how the images illustrate the story of the song.
Try to think of a song that you like and the story behind the song.
Find the lyrics for the song at: http://www.lyrics.com/ and copy each line of the lyrics onto a sheet of paper.
Put the sheets of paper in order and then do a simple sketch on each sheet of paper to illustrate the line from the song.
Now using a simple digital camera you can create your own 'stop motion' video of the song.

Once you have create your video you will need to add the sound track too. This is a great way to enjoy music and develop your English.

Learning Phrases and Phrasal Verbs

Most students find learning phrasal verbs a real challenge. They can be confusing and complex, but today's activity looks at a way that you can make learning them a little more fun.

This activity combines two different website Phrases.net and TransL8it to help you learn and test yourself on new phrasal verbs.

Task:

First decide on the phrasal verbs you want to learn or revise. If you can't think of any then just go to: http://www.phrases.net/ and you'll see some in the left column.

Click on one and you'll see that you get more information about it. This includes what it means, an audio clip example of how to say it and an example sentence. You can also get a translation.

Listen to the audio clip and then highlight the example sentence and copy it. Once you have copied it go to: http://www.transl8it.com/ and paste or write the sentence into the left hand field. Then click on the button that says 'transL8it-->'. This will translate your text into English sms texting language.

Now copy and paste the sms translation into a word processing document.
Go back to Phrase.net and repeat this process with ten more example sentences from phrasal verbs you would like to remember and copy them all into your document.
Once you have the ten sentences in sms text chat language, try to remeber them and translate them back to standard English ( You can leave this until the next day if you prefer).
Once you have finished check your answers by copying and pasting your translations of the sms text into the left column http://www.transl8it.com/ to see if you get the same translation again.

You can use this technique to rivise any new phrases or sentneces that you learn. You could even start translating example sentences from other vocaulary you want to learn. This will also help you to understand English sms and text chat.

Learn How to Correct Errors

Students often expect their teacher to correct their written errors, but students can also learn a lot from looking for and correcting errors in written work.

This activity gives you the chance to test your correction skills and find errors in short texts using a site called BookOven and a tool called SpellChecker

Task:

Go to: http://bookoven.com/ Here on the front page you will see a short text that may have an error.

Look at the text carefully and try to find any errors. If you see one try to correct it. If you aren't sure you can copy and paste the text to http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/.
Paste the text in to spellchecker and then 'Spell Check.'

This will open a new window showing where any errors are.

Go back to BookOven and correct the error. You will then be given another error to check. Try to find and correct at least 10 mistakes.

You can do this everyday for a few minutes and it will improve your ability to check and correct your own work. You can also use SpellChecker to check your own compositions.

Learn About Science in English

Learning English can help to make knowledge available to you in so many fields of study, especially science. So today's task looks at how you can learn more about science and improve your listening, reading and vocabulary at the same time.

This is quite a challenging task, so I'm also going to include a link to a dictionary site called Ninjawords which will help you.

Task:

Let's start with some listening. Go to: http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/ Here you will see a collection of 1 minute audio podcasts.

Choose one to listen to. Here are some suggestions.

Get a pencil and some paper ready, turn up your volume and click the small button to play the audio. As you listen try to make notes about some of the facts. You can listen two times if you are finding it difficult.

Now scroll down the page and you will see the text that you heard. Read it and check how much of the information you noted down was correct. It may also help to listen again as you read.

Now go to http://ninjawords.com/ and check the meaning of any words you don't know.

Once you made notes about the new words listen to the podcast once more and this time try to read along copying the pronunciation of the speaker if you can.

If you are really interested in science and you found this activity useful then you can subscribe to the podcast using i-tunes or download the audio to your computer and print a copy of the text. This will be useful for revising the texts in a few days time.

Spending just a few minutes each day doing this activity will help to improve your listening, reading and vocabulary, so why not give it a try?

Ask and Answer Questions

One key element of communication is the ability to formulate and answer questions. This is fundamental to using language in a communicative way to get information and build relationships.

Task:

Go to: http://www.hunch.com/ You will see your first question. You can either answer it by clicking your choice or skip it.

Work through the questions. These will tell Hunch a bit more about you and help it to provide better information.
After you get through the first few questions you will be offered help with making some decisions.

If these don't interest you explore more topics, or you can get some advice on learning a language by using the search and then answering the appropriate questions.
You can now get help with specific questions too by using the search and typing in what you want to know.

If you want to use Hunch regularly to ask and answer questions then it's a good idea to create an account and then it will store your answers and give you better results.

Understanding Different English Accents

It is great that English is spoken by so many people around the world, but this can make it very difficult to understand, because there are such a range of different accents.

In today's activity we use a website called The Speech Accent Archive to listen to different accents and compare them.

Task:

Your first activity is to listen to this audio file and try to write down what you hear. This speaker is from the UK and has an accent from around Oxfordshire.
Once you have listened a number of times and written down the complete text you can check here to see if it is correct. You will see both the written text and phonetic transcription.
Now you can listen to the same text again spoken by a variety of other nationalities. Listen to each one and try to decide what nationality they are:

Now if you go to the link to the Atlas, you can try to find the same recording of an English speaker from your country. Atlas link

Just click on the atlas to go to the continent you come from, then click on the flag which is closest to you.

You can then listen to the speaker from your country and compare the accent to one of the other countries. You might want to see if you can hear important differences between the accent from your country and the accent of a country you want to visit. You can compare the phonemic script too and try to spot the differences. here's the script of a man from the UK.

I hope you find this activity useful. Be sure to listen to some of the other accents too and try to record your own accent and listen to the differences. You don't have to change your accent, but being aware of differences can help you to understand more.

Learning English can be very useful, but having a certificate telling potential employers what level you are can really help to open more opportunities for you.

If you aren't sure which exam to take or what you level is, today's activity could help you a little. It uses two websites, one produced by Cambridge ESOL to test your level and the other Exam English to help you practice for a test.

Task:

Go to: http://www.cambridgeesol.org/testyourenglish/ and click on 'Begin Test'

You will the see a series of multiple choice questions. For each questions you can select only one possible answer.

Once you have worked through the test, you will get a suggestion for the appropriate level of test that you should take.
Once you have your recommendation go to: http://examenglish.com/ Here you will see a range of practice tests. Try the type of test that is for your level.

If you do well at the practice test you might consider taking the real test and getting a certificate.

Images for Vocabulary Revision

Vocabulary is the key to expressing yourself well in any language and the key to learning and improving your vocabulary is constant revision. Luckily there are lots of sites which can help to make this easier and more fun.

Today's activity is based around the PhotoMunchrs website that combines words and images into a simple game.

Task:

Go to: http://imagine-it.org/flickr/PhotoMunchrs.html here you will see a grid with images and at the top you should see a word.

To play the game you simply use your arrow keys to go to images that are connected with the word. Each time you find an image press the space bar.
If you are correct the image will disappear and you will score a point. If you are wrong you will loose one of your 3 lives.

You will have to find 7 example images to move to the next level and a new word.

Translate a Video Clip

Translation can be a very useful tool in helping you to learn a language. It can make you think much more closely about the relationship of your language to the language you are learning. Translating also makes you think very carefully about the meaning of the text you need to translate and how to express it in your own language. Translation is also a valuable skill and one that could help you to get work.

Today's activity uses a site called Social Translator where you can find lots of translated videos, and texts and some that are waiting to be translated.

Task:

You are going to start by listening to a short video clip and writing the text in English. You can watch the clip here:

Play the clip and pause it while you write down the text with a pencil and paper.
Once you have written down the complete text in English, check it against the English transcription on the site here by clicking on 'Play' next to English > English.

Correct any errors in your text. Then go to http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ here you can type in each sentence of your English text and click to translate it into your own language.

Computer translation is not very accurate, so you will need to think about the meaning and correct the translation.
Once you have the complete text translated, you can join the Social Translation site and add your translation to the video clip. Just click on 'Join' and create your account, then go back to the video and click on 'click here' underneath 'Translate This'.

This is a great way to practice your listening , grammar, vocabulary and translation skills.

If you want to request translations of words you don't know you can go to: http://socialtranslator.org/request and add a word or phrase.

Learn from English Song Lyrics

There are many great reasons to study song lyrics, not least because you enjoy listening to the song. You can learn new words from them, singing along helps with your pronunciation, reading as you listen helps with listening and reading skills.

So today's activity uses a site called Lyrics.com where you can find loads of song lyrics as well as music videos of people singing the songs.

Task:

Go to: http://www.lyrics.com/ think of a song in English that you like or a singer who sings in English.
Type their name or the song name into the search field and find the song or singer.

If you can't think of a song just select one of the popular ones from the home page

You will then see the lyrics and on most songs you can also find a video. Play the video, listen and follow the lyrics.

You can either just listen or you can try to sing along. Doing either one or both will help with your listening reading and pronunciation.
Try to listen to a new song each day, or select one song and try to memorise the lyrics by singing along a number of times.

Find Idioms in Everyday Language

The English language has a huge number of idioms and this number seems to be constantly growing. You have to be careful how and when you use these idioms, as many are used in very specific contexts.

Today's activity will help you discover how and where new idioms are used.

Task:

Go to the IdiomSite at: http://www.idiomsite.com/. Here you will see an index of idioms. You can either scroll down the idioms or select a letter from the alphabet.

The idiom site tells you what each idiom means, but it is really useful to find out how these are used in context.
Go to: http://www.americancorpus.org/ and click enter. Type in your idiom to the 'Words' field then click on 'Search' You will then see the idiom appear on the right.

Click on the idiom and you will get a list of example sentences that use the idiom.

If you click on the source of the sentence, you will be able to see it in a complete paragraph.

This is a great way to find examples of idioms in use that you can copy and add to your vocabulary notes. Try to find 4 new idioms each day along with an example for each one.

Find Words that Express Your Thoughts

There are times when you know what you want to say, but you just don't know the right word in English. This can be very frustrating, but it is good to practice explaining the words you want so that you can get the word you want.
Today's activity will look at a website called OneLook Reverse Dictionary which can help you with this. You can also practice using the site by doing an online crossword puzzle.

Task:

To try out the OneLook Reverse Dictionary got to: http://www.onelook.com/reverse-dictionary.shtml
Type in the definition for a word (e.g. 'a bird tat can swim') and see if what the dictionary offers you. You will get a list of related words and the most likely matches will come first (my example got 'duck' at 3).

Click on the words and you will find definitions and examples of pronunciation.

This is a great tool to use to help you do crosswords in English. You can find crossword puzzles at: http://www.boatloadpuzzles.com/playcrossword
Copy the crossord clues and type them into the Reverse Dictionary.

Find a word that matches the number of letters for the clue and then type it in.

Soon you will be solving crossword puzzles, developing your vocabulary and developing your ability to explain words in English rather than relying on translation.

Read a Film Script for Pronunciation Practice

Reading is a great way to improve your vocabulary, but it can also be a good way to improve your pronunciation, especially if you can hear what you have to read.

Today's activity uses the IMSDB (Internet Movie Script database) and explores how you can use film scripts as reading to improve your pronunciation.

Task:

Find a movie in English that you like and which has good dialogue. If you don't have any English movies you may be able to find some at: http://quicksilverscreen.com/
Then go to http://www.imsdb.com/ and try to find the script.
There are lots of scripts on the IMSDB, but also a lot of advertising so be careful where you click. You can either search for the movie you want or browse by alphabet or genre.

Once you find the page with your movie on look for 'Read [movie name] script' and click on it. This will show you the movie script.

Here's an example of the script for the first Shrek movie which many people may have.

Once you find the script you want print up a few pages from it. Now find the movie and watch it. Try to follow the script and listen to the intonation of the speakers.
Intonation is the change in pitch and it usually either falls or rises at the ends of sentences or at commas just like punctuation in writing.

Try to mark on the script where you here the intonation rise or fall. Then try reading the script and trying to imitate the actors. try to copy their emotions and accents.

Read along while watching the the movie. You don't have to do this for the whole film, but trying to imitate small chunks will help to develop your pronunciation and your ability to hear and understand the changes in emotion that it conveys.

Revise your Vocabulary with Images

Sometimes you know the word you want to use, but you just can't say it when you are in a situation that is putting you under pressure. This can be very frustrating.

So today's activity is going to use a timed image game to put you under some pressure to recall your vocabulary.

Task:

Go to: http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/ and click on 'Start labeling'

You will be paired with another person to play the game. You will then see a series of images. When the images appear you have to type as many words as you can to describe the image.

For this image, you could type a variety of word like, bird, fly, sky, soar etc.
You will get point every time your word is the same as your partner. Try to score as many points as you can.
At the end of two minutes, you can see the images again and see the words your partner suggested.

This is a great way to revise your vocabulary and put yourself under pressure to remember words. You can easily play this for a few minutes every day to improve your ability to recall vocabulary.

One of the great things about English and the Internet is that they both allow you to connect with and share your interests and ideas with people from all around the world. That is never more true than in the case of football (or soccer if you prefer) .

So, today's task is based around joining an online community to share your interests and communicate with others in English. This can help you develop your vocabulary, help your reading and writing skills and may even help you to make some new friends.

Task:

Go to: http://www.footbo.com Make sure that you have selected to view the site in English by using the small icon at the top left of the screen.

Now complete the free sign up form. You just need to create a password and add an email address. You must be 13 years old or over though to access the site. Once you have completed the registration you'll get an email with a link . Click your link to activate your account.

You can then start adding information to your profile. This includes links to your favourite sites as well as information about yourself. You can skip this if you prefer.

You can also add favourite teams and favourite players to your profile as well as selecting players to be part of your dream team.

To start interacting with other members of the site you should go to the 'Forums'. here you can start adding questions and answering questions.

You can also play a game and try to predict the results of future matches by clicking on 'Predictions'

Or if you prefer you can click on Teams or Players and get information, images and watch video clips.

This is a great way to enjoy using and improving your English and sharing your interest in football.

Create Your Own English Comic Strip

The phrases and expressions used in written English are often different from those that would be used in spoken English, so remembering spoken English phrases is very important.

Today we will look at a fun way you can use spoken phrases to create comic strips using the Make Belief Comix website. You can use these either to remind your self of any new phrases you are learning, or just to enjoy creating your own comic strip.

Task:

Go to: http://www.makebeliefscomix.com and click on 'Enter Here' below the comic strip.
You will then be able to see the comic creator. Think of some spoken phrases that you have learned recently. Think about how they would be used in conversation and how the people you are talking to might respond.
Now create a comic strip using the phrases and making them part of the dialogue. It's simple to make a comic strip. You just click on the first character you want to use, then scroll through different emotions that you would like them to have.

Once you have the one you want, just click on the person and they will appear in the comic strip. You can drag the person to the position you want them. Add other characters and text balloons for your dialogue.

When you have finished you can print up or email the comic strip to yourself and keep it as a reminder.

If you enjoy this activity, there are also some story ideas that you could try. Try the first one 'Tell your life story'. This is a nice way to tell people about yourself.

The 100 Most Common Words in English?

It's great to learn new words and structures in English, but sometimes it's also a good idea to go back and review what you already know.

Today's activity comes from the Sporcle website and is a quick test to see if you know the 100 most commonly used words in the English language.

Task:

Go to: http://www.sporcle.com/games/common_english_words.php You will see a grid with 100 space and a time limit of 12 minutes set and ready.

Before you start, think about what some of the most commonly used words might be in your first language. In English articles, pronouns and prepositions are used in almost every sentence, so you might think about starting with those.
When you are ready click on 'Ready? Click to Start'.

Start typing words into the box. Correct words will appear in the grid. If not you will have to delete the word and try another one.

After 12 minutes the correct words will appear. Good luck.

Poems for Pronunciation

Reading short poems is a really good way to develop your vocabulary and reading skills and even your pronunciation. Poems are also good because many are quite short so you can read them quite quickly.

Today's activity will show you how to get a new poem each day from Every Day Poets and how you can get help with the pronunciation of the words and then record yourself saying the poems.

Task:

The first thing you will need to do is to go to: http://www.everydaypoets.com/ This site publishes a new poem everyday. If you add your email address to the subscribe box you will then receive a new poem everyday in your email.

When you receive your poem, or using the one on the website, try to read it out aloud. You can check the pronunciation of any new words by using http://www.howjsay.com/ just type in any word you are unsure of and you will hear someone saying the word.

Once you are sure that you can read the poem and pronounce all the words, then go to: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Here you can download a small piece of software that you can use on your computer to record and listen to yourself.
Once you have downloaded the software, simply open it, make sure you have microphone ready and then click the red 'Record ' button and read your poem. As you read you will see a sound wave being created.

Once you have recorded the poem press 'Stop' and then listen to yourself by pressing the greeen 'Play'. If you are happy with the poem save it, if you want to try to record it again and make it better, click on the X to delete the file and record again.

Be sure to save your recordings and come back and listen to them again a week or two later. As your pronunciation improves you might want to record them again. You can save the recordings by going to the File menu then clicking on 'Export As WAV'.

Write a Song in English

Not everything you do when you are learning a language as to be serious. It's great to use the language you are learning to have fun and to communicate with people.

In today's activity we are going to use one of my favourite websites Let them Sing it For You to have some fun, create some songs and listen to famous people singing them.

Task:

First you need to write a song. This doesn't have to be difficult. You can write a song about yourself or a friend by using their name.
You simply create a sentence about the person using the letters of their name to start the first word of each line.
Here's how it is done using my name (Nik). I have three lines, each beginning with the letters of my name.

So a make a line about myself starting with each letter.
Not very good at sport
I like to go to the beach
Know a lot about different websites

Once you have your short song, go to Let them Sing it For You and type the words into the field and click on the arrow.

The site will then convert you words into a song that you can listen to. Here's mine.

You then just email the song to your friends or yourself.

If you want to hear other songs you can go to a Lyrics website like A-Z Lyrics and copy and paste the lyrics to create songs to share with your friends. You could also send them some singing messages instead of emails.

Quizzes can be fun ways of finding out about yourself and other people and learning new vocabulary and questions.

In today's activity we are going to look at a range of quizzes from FunQuizCards and then you can try to create your own.

Task:

First I have selected some quizzes for you to try, so you can see how they work and what you can learn from them.
Take these tests and find out:

Which music suits your personality?
Are you a couch potato?
Do you look older than your age?
Do you deserve promotion?
Are you a good student?

Now think about your own quiz. Here are some topics you could make a quiz about:

- Your country - Questions about special places or significant events
- Your favourite singer / movie star / artist - Questions about their achievements or personal information
- English grammar - Questions about verb tenses
- Food that you like - Questions about ingredients
- New words your have learned - Questions about word definitions
- A special topic that you enjoy - Questions about specific information about that topic
- You and our friends - Questions about your likes and dislikes - You could share these with each other and find out how much you know about each other.

You can use Wikipedia to find detailed information and check your facts.
Think of about 5 - 10 questions. Now go to: http://www.funquizcards.com/qc/step1.php
Enter a name and an email address, then give your quiz a name and choose the number of questions your quiz will have. Then click 'Continue'.

Now enter your question and three possible answers. Click the button to show which is correct.

Then click on 'Continue' This will show you all the questions and answers you have added. If you are happy with them click continue again. Now you will see a link to your quiz. Click the link and try the quiz to make sure it is correct.

Now you can either share the link with friends by email or post it to your blog or MySpace or any network that you would like to share the quiz with.

Develop Your Marketing Vocabulary

For people who want to use English within their profession, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to develop your English within specific work related topics. So in today's activity we are going to look at how you can do that.

Today we will be looking at how you can develop you listening and vocabulary knowledge of marketing and particularly online marketing. We will be using a listening and script from the Double Click website as well as some web based tools to help you learn, record and remember new words.

Task:

Go to: http://www.doubleclick.com/nervecenter/ Here you will see an image of Carl Hendra. If you click on one of the topic areas on the left hand side menu you will hear her talking about those marketing topics.
As you listen you will see keywords on the right of the screen. Listen and try to understand what you can.
Once you have listened once download the tapescript and listen again. This time you can follow with the script as you listen.

To download the script you will need to click on 'Download Transcript' and then 'Carla Hendra'

Once you have done this, copy the first section of the script and go to the VocabGrabber website.
Paste the text from the script into the field and click on 'Grab Vocabulary'.

This will produce a 'word cloud' of the words in the text.

Now you can click on each of the words to get a definition of the word and some information about related words. You can also see examples of the words in use. If you want to be sure to remember these words you could use Wordie to create a word list. There are some instructions on how to do this in the List Your Favourite Words activity.
Lastly, listen through to Carla Hendra talking again without the script and see how much you remember. Write a summary of the main parts of the talk using FutureMe and send it to yourself so that you receive it in two weeks time along with the link to the DoubleClick website.

Then you can check your notes and listen again. This will help you to see how much you remember and refresh your memory of the vocabulary.

Test Your British vs American English

As most students of English know, it can be spoken differently in different countries or even in different parts of the same country. The differences are not only in the grammar and pronunciation but also there are differences of vocabulary.

Today's activity tests your knowledge of British and American English vocabulary.

Task:

Take some time to look through all the British English words and see if you know or can remember the US word for the same thing. If you aren't sure, you might want to check in a dictionary or you could go to the British to American translator at: http://www.translatebritish.com/index.php

Use the translator to check any words you are not sure of. When you are ready, click on Ready to start.

Try to type in all the US words as quickly as you can. You will only have five minutes.

If you can't get all the words in 5 minutes, don't worry, you will see the answers at the end. You can always try again another day until you can remember them all in 5 minutes.

Do you ever drive while talking on the phone? In the UK it is both dangerous and illegal. To prove to people that they can't drive effectively and talk to someone on their mobile phone a short game has been created.

In today's activity you are going to play the Driving Challenge game and see if you can listen and complete the challenge.

Task:

Make sure you have the volume on your computer turned up.
Go to: http://www.dft.gov.uk/drivingchallenge/ listen and follow the instructions.

The test is to count the number of different colour T-shirts you see, but I would like you to also listen and try to remember what questions the woman on the phone asks you while you are driving.

Today's activity uses a tool called WordSift that can help you learn more about the vocabulary you find in the texts you read online.

Task:

Select a text that you have read recently. You could try reading then taking a text from the magazine section of the British Council's LearnEnglish website.
You could try this text about Surfing or search the archives.
Once you have read go to http://www.wordsift.com/ and copy the text into the field. Then click on 'Sift'.

This will sort the vocabulary from the text and show you the 50 most common words in the text.

You can then click on any new words and then move down the page to see more information about each word.

You will find images, a word web with definitions and if you go further down the page you can find example sentences from the text that use the word.

This can make it much easier for you to understand new words and make notes of them. You can get help with this if you check out the activity on How to Remember More Vocabulary

Use this tool regularly after reading a text and you will soon see your vocabulary beginning to improve. Here you can find more Daily Activities to help build you vocabulary

Read Along With Films and TV Shows

Watching films and TV can be a great way to improve your language skills and it can also be a lot of fun. What you are watching can really help you to understand the language and how it is used in context.
Watching films and TV can be made more productive though if you have a script to help you understand what you are hearing, and even more so if you have a translations of the script.

Today's activity looks at a site called Cswap that can help you with this.

Task:

Go to: http://www.cswap.com/ and search for the script to a film that you like. You can either do this using the search or browse through the alphabetical listings.

Once you have found one go to YouTube and see if you can find some clips from the film.

1. Watch the clip and see how much you understand.
2. Read the script in English and check your understanding, then watch the clip again.
3. Click to get a translation of the script into your language and read and compare with the English script.

Now read the section of the script in English: Toy Story 2 Script
Now read the text in your own first language.

You can try doing this for just one clip or try to watch all the parts of a film, but only do a small section each day. Try to go back to the beginning of the film each time and watch without any support.

Finding Out About People

The Internet is a great way to find out more about people from other countries, their lives and their culture. Understanding these things can make it much easier to understand the language and the things that people talk about.

Today's activity is based around materials from the New York Times and you are going to listen to ordinary people from New York talking about their lives and the kinds of things they do.

This will also help you develop your listening skills and your ability to understand a range of different accents.

Task:

Think about the things that you do each day and make some quick notes about your daily habits and routine.
Now go to: The Type A Teenager

Here you will hear a teenager from New York talking about her daily habits. Listen and compare them to your own.
The text is about 2 mins long and you can also watch the images of the girl. Think about how you would tell her about the differences between your life and her life. You can pause the audio if you want to make notes.

Write a message about the differences in your life. If you want to you can post the message on the website and read other people's comments at: One in 8 Million - Omika Jikaria
If you want to post your comments you will need to register on the site.

There are many more people on this part of the websites talking about their lives, so if you enjoy this activity have a look and a listen to the lives of some of the other New York people.

Learn Your Text Speak Acronyms

Over the years text messaging has developed its own system of spelling using acronyms, which can save time and make writing messages shorter.

Sms and different forms of text messaging have become more common in everyday English communication, so it is very important that you learn some of these acronyms and understand English text messages.

Today's task is a test of you texting vocabulary and it comes from the Sporcle website. Once you try the test you can see the answers, but first you might like to look back at this activity which shows you a poster written using English texting language

Task:

Go to: http://www.sporcle.com/games/chatacronyms.php You will see a grid with some texting acronyms.
When you are ready to start the test click on 'Ready? Click to Start'

You will then be able to type in your answers. If they are correct they will appear in the grid next to the acronym. If they are wrong you will have to delete them and try again.

You have 6 minutes to do the test. At the end of six minutes you will see the answers. If you find it too difficult, click on 'Give up and you will see the answers. You can then try again or come back and try it another day.

Be sure to make a note of any of the acronyms you didn't know. You could also try making sentences using these acronyms. Remember these are used when you are text messaging with someone. They aren't used in formal essays or letters to people.

Write Your English Resume

Many people learn English because they need it to help find work. Having a resume or CV in English can also help you and help to display your English skills, but writing a resume isn't easy.

In today's activity you are going to create an English resume using a tool that will help you with the structure and the wording of your resume.

Task:

Go to: http://www.howtowritearesume.net/ and click on 'Start Your Resume Now'. You will need to register to use the site, but this is quite quick, especially if you already have a Yahoo or Google account.
Once you have registered the 'Resume Builder' will take you through the steps involved in creating your resume. First, you can start to add your details to the resume

You will then be asked to add a headline. If you click on the template tab you will get some suggestions for the wording of this.

You can then add details about your education, work history, achievements, qualifications etc. Again you can get help wording these where you see the template tab. You just select the appropriate words from the structure.

Finally, when you get to the format stage you can either download you resume as a text file (then edit on your computer using a word processor) or html (if you want to put it on a website)
You can also post it to a range of free job searching websites, but only do this if you are serious about finding work and your information is true.

Improving your knowledge of words and enlarging your vocabulary is a very important part of language learning. It's also very important to understand how words are used and what 'real' people think they mean. Words can have a very personal meaning for many people.

In today's daily activity you will find out how to learn more about new words each day and also enjoy watching and listening to videos of people telling your what the word's personal meaning is to them.

Task:

Go to: http://www.wordia.com/ here you will see the words that have been added each day this month. Just put your mouse over a day to see what the word is for that day. Click on the day and you will see a video with a person talking about the word.

To get a new video sent to you everyday, just add your email address to the subscription field and each day you will be sent a link to the newest word.

You can also use the site to search for words. This is a good way to extend your knowledge of words you already know and compare your understanding of the word to that of the person in the video.

Along side each word you also get a dictionary definition and some suggestions for related words that you can explore.

If you like this site and you have a favourite English word you can also register for free, and add your own definitions and videos about English words that you like. You will need to have a YouTube account though. Just click 'Sign Up' on the left of the screen.

50 Word Stories

Writing creative stories is a great way to practice your English and get the chance to use a wide range of vocabulary and different sentence forms. Creative writing can take a long time though.

In today's activity we look an idea from the DailyLit website. The challenge is to write a story in 50 words. No more no less. The story should still have a beginning a middle and an end.

Task:

To get some ideas for how to do this, looks at this page on the DailyLit site and read through some of the stories that users of the site have submitted.

Writing an Essay in English

For many people writing an essay in their first language is a challenge, but writing one in a second language can be even more demanding and stressful. The key to good essay writing though in any language is good planning.

Today's activity looks at a tool called Essay Map to help you effectively plan your essay. It takes you through the processes involved in planning and at the end of the activity you can print up your plan to use it as a basis for you essay.

Task:

Before you begin you should think about the theme of your essay. You could to write about one of the topics from the lectures in our previous activity Listening to Lectures in English or you could watch a lecture on Academic Earth.
If you prefer to practice with an easier topic you could write about:
- : The challenges faced by young people in your country
- : Technology and the opportunities it offers for the future
- : The most interesting places in your country
- : Why you study English
When you have chosen a topic go to http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/essaymap/

Type in your name and the topic you are going to write about. Then go to the introduction and add a few sentences. Then click on the arrow to add main points

You only need to give brief sentences here. Remember this is only the plan and these are only the main areas you will cover when you write the essay.

Once you have these three main ideas you will be able to move on through the map and add the key points you want to include in each of these sections. Complete the whole of you plan and add a conclusion.
Then print out your plan. next comes the hard part. You need to sit down and actually turn your plan into an essay. Writing the essay though will now be much easier, as you have done the thinking part and now you just have to concentrate on the language and making your thoughts clear.

Studying and developing your English doesn't have to be just hard work, you can also have some fun while you do it.

Today's activity is a game that takes you on an adventure through a beautifully illustrated world. The world of Scary Girl

As you explore the world you'll need to read instructions and find out how to complete your tasks. This will help both with your reading and your vocabulary.

Task:

Go to: http://www.scarygirl.com/world.php This will take you to the beginning of the game. Wait for it to load and then click on 'Enter the World'

You will then be able to choose your level. Start with the easy level first.

You will see a brief introduction, then you will get your first instructions. Read the instructions and work your way through the game.

The game is quite long and has many levels so you may want to save your game and come back to it another day. To save your game click on the small TV screen.

You will then be given a menu of options. Select to save your game.

Listening to Lectures in English

For anyone thinking of studying abroad at a university in an English speaking country, one of the big challenges will be listening to lectures and taking notes. Today's activity will help you to practice and develop this skill using authentic lectures from The British Academy.

These lectures are around an hour long, but you don't have to listen to the lectures all at one time, in fact it might be better to listen in segments of around ten minutes until you build up your listening and note taking skills.

Task:

Go to the British Academy site at: http://britac.studyserve.com/home/default.asp and scroll down the list of lectures. Try to choose one that sounds interesting. I would recommend 'A Question of Culture' as the speaker has a good clear voice and speaks at a good steady pace.
When you find a lecture that interests you, click on the ear icon on the right.

This will show you a brief introduction to the lecture. You should read it first before you listen. Then get some paper and a pen ready to make notes.

Then click on the 'Hear lecture now' link and the audio player will open in a pop up window. It may take a little while to load. When it has finished, click on the 'Play' button and start listening and taking notes.

Try taking notes for around 5 - 10 mins. At first you can use the pause button so tat you have time to write. You may also want to do some background research on the topic to help you understand. You could do this by taking some keywords from the introduction and searching Wikipedia for more information.
Try to do this for about 10 mins each day. This will soon start to develop your listening and note taking skills.

Quick Reading Activity

Reading in a foreign language can often seem a bit boring and time consuming, but it is a key way to improve your vocabulary and understanding of grammar and word order.

In today's activity I'd like to show that reading doesn't have to be dull and that you can improve your English using just a short daily activity, that will also help you learn more about the world and keep in touch with the news.

This activity uses a part of The BBC News website called In Pictures. The site shows you interesting pictures that have a sentence about each one describing what is happening. Most of the pictures are in sequences, so you can read about a topic or just select pictures of the day each day. Reading in this way is quick, you have wonderful images to help you understand the text and you can still develop your vocabulary.

Task:

Go to the BBC In Pictures feature find an image that looks interesting. There are a few to choose from or you could just click on the image sequence from the previous day. Here is the sequence from 15th April In Pictures

Once you click on the image it should take you to the start of the sequence. Read the descriptive sentence, make a note of any new words, then go to the next image.

Here are a few sequences you might find interesting;

Life in a squat looks at how people in the UK who can't afford rent live.
Kora maker looks at the life of a man who makes musical instruments
Women's lives in northern Iraq looks at Women's lives in northern Iraq!
Easter worldwide shows how Easter was celebrated in different countries

Taking personality tests is a great way to find out a bit more about yourself, improve your vocabulary and learn some new questions. It's also quite good fun.
Today's activity is a personality test which includes 41 questions. At the end of the test you get some information about your personality and the types of job that will suit you.

Task:

Go to: http://www.41q.com/ and click on 'Start' You will then see the first question and choice of two answers. You must select one of the answers to get the next question.

Work through the answers and at the end you will get information about your personality type. Tip: If you have any problems with vocabulary and you want to check the meanings of any of the words, you can simply go to Google.com and types define: your word and it will give you a definition of the word.

Chatting to Strangers

I was always told never to talk to strangers, but if you are careful, chatting to strangers online can be a good way to practice your English.

First, things you should never tell someone online are:

Your address
Your telephone number
Never agree to meet with someone you have met online

When using an online chat site to practice your English, it might be better to invent a fictional personality to use. The chat site that we are going to use for today's activity is called Omegle and it allows you to chat anonymously in English with a total stranger.

Task:

Before you go to the chat site, decide what information you would like to share and what you would like to know. It is good to think of a few things before you start as it can sometimes be difficult to get conversations started.
Things you could discuss are;
Sport
The culture of the country
The weather
A good film you have seen recently
Taste in music or art
Jobs or studies
It's good idea to have a few questions prepared on any of the topics you want to talk about.
The information you share doesn't have to be true, but if you use your own experiences, you are more likely to have things to say.
When you have 6 or 7 questions ready got to: http://omegle.com/ and click the 'Start a chat' button.

One of the first things you may be asked is; "asl?" which means age, sex (Are you male or female?), and location.
Remember: You don't have to be honest about these and never give anyone your exact location, a country or town should be enough to get conversation started.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable with the person you are chatting with or if they ask questions you don't like, simply click on 'Disconnect' and you can start a new conversation with someone else.
It might take a few attempts to get a conversation going, but don't be discouraged. It's all good practice.

How Words are Used Together

Reading regularly is not only a great way to improve your vocabulary and learn new things, but also a good opportunity to develop your understanding of how words work together and which words are commonly used together.

Today's activity is aimed at helping you raise your awareness of this and should help you to create simple 'Cloze' activities that you can use to quickly revise texts and get a deeper knowledge of the lexical relationships in them. The activity uses a tool called a Cloze test creator.

Task:

You can either use a text that you have studied before or you can find something that interests you on a website like BBC news or the British Council's LearnEnglish site.
This article on Surfing might be appropriate or you could search for something more suitable in the magazine archive
Open the Cloze test creator and copy and paste the text that you have read into the text field. You don't need to use the whole text, just a couple of paragraphs should be enough.

Select 'Interactive' and 'No clues', then select which features of the text you would like to test yourself on.

You could just make it random and click on 'Submit Query'

The website will now produce an interactive activity for you. You can then type the missing words into the text. If you get the words right you will score points, if they are the wrong word they will be red.

A Job Interview in English

Interviewing for a job can be very stressful in any language, but if you have to do it in English then it's a good idea to make sure you do some extra preparation.

Today's activity looks at the kinds of questions you may get asked at an interview, how to answer them and some tips for possible questions you could ask.

The activity is based around the E-Microsoft Interview website. The website isn't produced by Microsoft, but it is a site designed to help people who want to work for them. I've also used some videos from YouTube. YouTube can be a great place to research possible interview questions and answers.

Task:

Start by imagining the kinds of questions you might get asked at job interview. Make a quick list of them.
Then go to: HR Questions
Here you will see a list of popular interview questions. Compare them with your own list.
Now think about how you would answer the questions. Here's a sample answer to a very popular question "Why should we hire you?"

Now go back to the HR Questions and look at the advice on giving answers. You can do this by clicking 'Read more..'

After you have read the advice, think again about how you would answer the questions. If you have a video camera or a web cam on your computer, you could record yourself answering the questions, then look at the video and decide what improvements you could make.

It is also important when you go to an interview to ask questions about the post you are applying for. Here are some questions that you might like to ask at your interview.

Here are some interview tips that you might want to think about too. Lastly, to give you some inspiration, here's a video telling you about what it is like to work at Google. Would you like to work there?

Internet Slang Vocabulary

The English language is constantly growing, developing and changing. Nowhere is this more true than on the Internet. There are new words phrases and acronyms being invented all of the time. Many of these disappear very quickly, but other stay and become part of the language, so it can be really useful to know these.

So today's activity comes from the Slang Translator and dictionary website. This activity is not appropriate for those under 18 years old.

Task:

You are going to start with an Internet slang quiz. Go to: http://www.noslang.com/quiz.php
You'll see a number of multiple choice questions. Select what you think is the correct answer.

Try to answer as many questions as you can. If there are any you are unsure about check the word by going to the slang translator at: http://www.noslang.com/addslang.php
Type in the slang word and click on the 'Translate' button.

You should then get a definition for the slang word. When you have finished the quiz submit your answers and see how many you got right. If you enjoyed this quiz, try another one here

One of the great things about being able to speak and understand English is that it gives you access to a huge amount of varied reading materials in all kinds of different forms and on all kinds of topics.

For today's activity we are going to explore a website called Issuu which publishes magazines online.

One of the most enjoyable acts of reading is browsing through magazines. So in this activity you are going to be able to browse through some magazines and just enjoy reading about topics that you like.

To browse the magazines, simply click on the cover. The magazine will open like the one below and then you can click on the pages to zoom in so that you can read the text.

Or you can open them full screen on your monitor and just use the arrows on the left and right of your screen to turn the pages.
Task:

Go to the Publications section of the website at: http://issuu.com/publications
You can browse the different categories for something that interests you. Then just read and enjoy. If you prefer you can try one of these magazines. Just click on the cover of one you like and they will open full screen on your monitor. Press escape 'esc' on your keyboard once you have finished reading.

This is a good one for those interested in fashion

This one is more of a youth culture type of magazine.

For the more seriously minded and those interested in business and computing

Or for those into keeping fit.

If you really enjoy reading these magazines, you can register for free on the site and create your own magazine library or upload your own publications.

Dictation to Improve Your Listening

Dictation is a great way to improve your listening, but it can be very challenging. In today's activity we look at a site that helps you improve your listening and at how you can approach dictation activities without being defeated by them.
The activity uses a site called Listen and Write. This site has some good clear audio recordings and some useful tools to help you through the dictation.

Task:

You are going to listen to a recording called 'Teens, Television, and Depression'. The text is about a study that looks at the relationship between media use and mental health in teenagers.
Before you listen to the audio activity, make some notes on paper about what you think the text will mention.
Y0u could also think about your own views on this topic and the kinds of media devices you use, such as i-pods and computers. Do you think they have an effect on your mental health?
Now go to: http://www.listen-and-write.com/audio/show/459
Play through the complete audio recording and check your notes to see how many of the things you thought of were mentioned.

Make some more notes about what you remember from the audio text.
Now you are ready to start the dictation. Click to play the first part of the recording.
Listen and try to write in the words you hear. You can stop and start the player so that you have time to write.

If you are having problems you can click to get the next letter or the next word.

Try to finish the complete text. When you get to the end you can register on the site and record your score. If you have enjoyed this activity you could also try another dictation.

Improve Your Pronunciation

Pronunciation is a vitally important aspect of learning any language. However good your grammar and vocabulary is, if you can't pronounce words and sentences well, then people will struggle to understand you. One aspect of pronunciation that people often forget is 'intonation'. Intonation refers to the rise and fall in pitch of the voice.

Today's activity uses a site with some interactive activities from CUP to help you improve your intonation.

Task:

Go to: http://tinyurl.com/4d59se click on 'intonation'. You can then listen to some short conversations. The conversations are animated so they show you where the intonation goes up or down.
Listen to them and then try to copy them. Pay careful attention to the intonation. You can get more practice at developing your intonation using clips from movies. Find a clip of a movie you like and try to copy the rises and falls in intonation of the speaker. You can find lots of film clips on YouTube.

You can also try some of the other activities on the site that deal with word stress and sentence stress and learning the phonemic alphabet.

Ice Breaking Skills

Making friends and socialising in English can be very challenging, so if you are going to parties or having English speaking friends around it's a good idea to start developing a few 'ice-breaking' social skills. A nice way to entertain people and get to know them better is to offer to do a Tarot reading for them.

Tarot cards have been around for centuries and have and still are used as a way to help people understand their problems and to think about their future. Most people think they are a harmless form of entertainment, but others do take them very seriously. There are also some people who due to their religious beliefs object to them, so never try to force someone to have a reading if they object.

Today's task is to learn a little about Tarot cards and how to read them. This is also a very good listening task to develop your ability to listen for specific information.

Task:

Get a pencil and some paper ready so that you can make notes. Then go to: http://www.monkeysee.com/play/1892-basic-tarot-card-reading here you will find a series of videos teaching you how to use Tarot cards.

Watch each video and make notes about the meaning of each card. You'll need to work through all of the videos before you are able to do a complete reading.

Speed Up Your Memory

Good reading depends on your brain's ability to quickly and accurately recognise words. Today's activity tests your ability to recognise words by flashing quick phrases at you and then asking you to accurately reconstruct them.

The task uses a website called 'Games for the brain' which has a collection of mental challenges to help develop and test your IQ.

Task:

Go to: http://www.gamesforthebrain.com/game/speedread/

You will see a short phrase appear for a few seconds. Try to memorise the words you see.

The words will then disappear and you will have to type them into the answer field.

You get 10 points for a correct answer. You then have a tip on how to improve your memory and IQ. When you have read the tip click on continue and you'll see another phrase.

It has a lot of really valuable information about different topics and can really help to develop your vocabulary.
Today's task is based around the weekly labeling game. There is a new one of these each week, so be sure to check the site each week and try out each new game.

Task:

Go to the game of the week at: http://visual.merriam-webster.com/games_game-week.php
Then click on play to start the game

Drag the labels to to the appropriate place on the image. If you don't know then move forward to another word.
