Translate a Video Clip

Translation can be a very useful tool in helping you to learn a language. It can make you think much more closely about the relationship of your language to the language you are learning. Translating also makes you think very carefully about the meaning of the text you need to translate and how to express it in your own language. Translation is also a valuable skill and one that could help you to get work.


Today's activity uses a site called Social Translator where you can find lots of translated videos, and texts and some that are waiting to be translated.

Task:
  • You are going to start by listening to a short video clip and writing the text in English. You can watch the clip here:




  • Play the clip and pause it while you write down the text with a pencil and paper.
  • Once you have written down the complete text in English, check it against the English transcription on the site here by clicking on 'Play' next to English > English.


  • Correct any errors in your text. Then go to http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ here you can type in each sentence of your English text and click to translate it into your own language.



  • Computer translation is not very accurate, so you will need to think about the meaning and correct the translation.
  • Once you have the complete text translated, you can join the Social Translation site and add your translation to the video clip. Just click on 'Join' and create your account, then go back to the video and click on 'click here' underneath 'Translate This'.


This is a great way to practice your listening , grammar, vocabulary and translation skills.

If you want to request translations of words you don't know you can go to: http://socialtranslator.org/request and add a word or phrase.

Read Along With Films and TV Shows

Watching films and TV can be a great way to improve your language skills and it can also be a lot of fun. What you are watching can really help you to understand the language and how it is used in context.
Watching films and TV can be made more productive though if you have a script to help you understand what you are hearing, and even more so if you have a translations of the script.

Today's activity looks at a site called Cswap that can help you with this.

Task:
  • Go to: http://www.cswap.com/ and search for the script to a film that you like. You can either do this using the search or browse through the alphabetical listings.


  • Once you have found one go to YouTube and see if you can find some clips from the film.



1. Watch the clip and see how much you understand.
2. Read the script in English and check your understanding, then watch the clip again.
3. Click to get a translation of the script into your language and read and compare with the English script.


  • Here's and example of this: Watch this clip from Toy Story 2



  • Now read the section of the script in English: Toy Story 2 Script
  • Now read the text in your own first language.
You can try doing this for just one clip or try to watch all the parts of a film, but only do a small section each day. Try to go back to the beginning of the film each time and watch without any support.

Translate a Music Video

In this activity I'd like you to try to do some translation. You should also be able to practice your listening and watch some videos too.

The activity uses a website called Dot Sub which has collections of videos which you can add subtitles to. These can either be transcriptions (the script in the same language) or translations. There is already quite a number of transcribed and translated videos, including a selection of music videos, so do look at some of those.
Task:
  • You are going to translate a simple song into your own language. To do this you will have to register on the site at: http://dotsub.com/signup.html
  • Once you have done that go to this link to Tom's Diner and click on 'Transcribe video'.
  • You should then play the clip, listen and pause it after each sentence to either write in the words in English or translate them to your own language.
  • Make sure that you also add the timing when the line from the audio began.
  • Try to either transcribe or translate the whole video. If you enjoy doing this you could translate some more of the videos and even upload some of your own videos and add subtitles to them.
